Vintage Primitive Folk Art Outsider Art Painting by Andrew Block

Vintage Primitive Folk Art Outsider Art Painting by Andrew Block

Andrew Block emigrated from Denmark to Solvang in 1914. Working as a blacksmith, he finally surrendered to the call of paint and canvas starting at 70 years old. Without really knowing how to paint Block produced over 500 paintings – and painted primarily on cardboard. It is knot know for sure wether he was influenced by the impressionists and Post-Impressionists, despite that his works are boldly colored and often depict landscapes, seascapes, and small towns and of course his observations of people.

Although I twinge at catagorizing his style he approached painting with simplicity and desire to tell a story, no matter how subdued yet earthy it was. It was both understated yet honest in its approach, which these days, is so under appreciated. I for one feel drawn to the unaffected and unpretentious quality of his artwork

Although Andrew Block only has a few auction records, Block exhibited his work at a number of museums and galleries including the Monterey Penisula Museum, San Diego Art Museum, Oakland Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, Elverhoy Museum, amongst others.
