Vintage Necklace from Papa New Guinea
Vintage Necklace from Papa New Guinea
When nature becomes art - an old shell necklace that can be worn or hung on the wall declaring itself, simply, without pomp or circumstance, art. It’s spectacular in its simplicity, not perfect, just elegant and natural.
From Papa New Guinea, probably made into a necklace at the turn of the 20th century. Ethnographic , tribal, mother of pearl. Hung by an old handwoven thin rope that would need to be replaced if worn. It’s dynamic and stunning in its imperfection.
With the shell’s strong mythological importance they were considered to be the links between the human and the spiritual world, bringing fertility and well-being. In the past, shells travelled on long pathways through the Asian Pacific, used as exchange items or currency and for creating ties and relationships between people.
It measures 6” at its widest and 8” in height, including the handwoven string. At its widest opening its 3 7/8” therefore a thin neck is needed. Because it’s so beautiful - a wall to hang it on is suggested!
