Vintage Mexican Virgin of Solitude Clay Figure
This painted clay figure is a version of Mary known as The Virgin of Solitude aka Virgen de la Soledad. She is the patron saint of Oaxaca and has a Basilica dedicated to her in the heart of the city. In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, she is a form of Marian devotion used to commemorate the solitude of Mary on Holy Saturday.
This statuette is made of carved clay and painted in lovely black and gold. The black acts as a base and the gold accents are stuck onto the base, providing more dimension. She holds a golden flower and wears a gold crown upon her head.
approx. 14” top to bottom x 7” across base x 4” depth at widest
