Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver and Coral Earrings with Pre-Columbian Faces

Vintage Mexican Sterling Silver and Coral Earrings with Pre-Columbian Faces

A unique pair of sterling silver earrings that were made sometime during the 1950's when more than just a nod to the influence of Pre-Columbian aesthetics were dominant in Mexican culture.

These are one of kind sterling silver earrings that create a delicate balance of aesthetic influences. The small, hollow faces are derived from indigenous 3D reliefs and masks, while the curvaceous bend of silver and coral reflects the European colonial influences that prevailed in Mexico during the early 17th century. The faces have bells inside and tinkle gently with movement, it's so subtle that I didn't notice it at first.

I haven't seen anything quite like these earrings, although, believe it or not, Tibet and China have produced something similar. I'm not sure where I've seen them, but I never forget a face!

I found these in a small antique shop in Mexico City on my latest sojourn and couldn't resist them!
