Vintage Black and White Studio Photos of American Indians 1800s

Vintage Black and White Studio Photos of American Indians 1800s

Vintage from the 19th century
Materials: Glass, paper, wood frame

This framed offset lithograph presents three studio portraits of young Native American men, each shown in traditional dress. Two meet the camera with directness and seriousness, their expressions steady and intentional. The third is turned slightly away, offering a quieter, contemplative presence. Together, the images feel formal, intimate, and historically grounded.

The works are titled Yellow Magpie, White Face, and Vapore, with titles and edition information printed along the lower margins. A printed signature appears in the lower margins as well.

The images are after photographs by Alfred Rinehart (American, 1861 to 1928), a noted late 19th and early 20th century portrait photographer. Rinehart moved with his brother from Indiana to Colorado, where he developed a successful career photographing Indigenous sitters as well as regional figures. His work is now held in multiple museum and archival collections.

Medium: Offset lithograph on paper
Surface: Glass
Framed

Condition
Overall very good vintage condition. There is light toning consistent with age, minor trapped debris beneath the glass, and small nicks and abrasions to the frame. The paper backing shows tears. These signs of wear are consistent with age and do not detract from the overall presentation.
