Old African Sculpture

Old African Sculpture

A spectacular, provocative Central African power figure style sculpture with a commanding presence and incredible texture. Carved wood form with layered block like volumes, embedded nails, and a sculptural head featuring multiple faces and a crown like silhouette. The surface shows decades of patina and wear, which gives it a raw, lived in impact that reads as both sculptural and ceremonial.

Nkisi Nkondi figures are historically associated with oath taking, dispute resolution, and protective enforcement rituals. Songye Nkishi figures were traditionally used by ritual specialists, often connected to healing, divination, and protection. This piece is offered as a powerful decorative and collecting object inspired by those traditions.

This piece is believed to originate from the Congo region of Central Africa, however I do not have documentation to confirm exact age, maker, or specific cultural attribution. It is being sold as a vintage, mid century object with unknown full provenance.

It is the kind of piece that changes as you live with it. Turn it. Revisit it. Let it do what strong objects do, keep revealing new angles, shadows, and details over time.

Safety note: protruding nails are sharp. Handle carefully and keep away from children and high traffic areas
