Kapsiki/Higi Tribe Metal Chain Apron - West African Artifacts

Kapsiki/Higi Tribe Metal Chain Apron - West African Artifacts

Kapsiki/Higi Tribe Metal Chain Apron – Women from the Kapsiki/Higi and other related ethnic groups in northern Cameroon, northeastern Nigeria and parts of Chad wear these traditional metal chain aprons or body ornaments, for both ceremonial and decorative purposes. These pieces are particularly associated with female initiation rites or wedding attire among the Kirdi and related ethnic groups. How exactly they’re worn, I do not know! They look like a codpiece but that’s just my vivid imagination going in another direction!

The Kapsiki/Higi tribe are an ethnic group who live along the western edge of the Mandara Mountains. The Higi, as the group is known in Nigeria and where the majority of this group is found, cultivate the mountain ridges and plains to the west, extending further into Nigeria.
