Antique Vintage Beaded Stool from Cameroon

Antique Vintage Beaded Stool from Cameroon

Cameroonian beaded stools, primarily from the Bamileke and Bamoun cultures in the Grassfields, are symbols of royal power, status, and spiritual connection, often featuring intricate and complex patterns representing creation and royalty (leopard). Originating with European trade beads from the 16th century onwards, these ornate seats, carved from wood, became exclusive to chiefs and nobles, signifying authority and wealth, with unique designs reflecting lineage, societal roles (like the Kwifo society), and mythical beliefs.

This particular one is old and a few of the cowry beads are dangling from the bottom. Rather than repair them I thought best to let them expose the age and intricacy of the piece.

It stands 17 1/4" in height while the diameter is 14' wide. It weighs a ton. Actually, I will be weighing it within the next few days which is why the shipping is high.
